Nhu Nguyen Thi Khanh

Nhu Nguyen is a PhD student in the field of Microbiology and Bioinformatics. She finished her undergraduate in Biotechnology (ranked in the top 5% of the students on the course) and her Master degree in Microbiology from the University of Science in Ho Chi Minh City. While in the Master course, she got her Masters project at Oxford University Clinical Research Unit, Ho Chi Minh City under the supervision of Prof. Stephen Baker. During this project she determined the genes responsible for third cephalosporin resistance in Shigella sonnei. With an interest in antibiotic resistant bacteria, she started her scientific career at OUCRU as a research assistant, and conducted research investigating the relationship of antimicrobial resistance and genotype in gram-negative bacteria, including Shigella sonnei and Acinetobacter baumannii. On top of that, she established a transposon mutant library in A. baumannii, which is being used to understand the mechanisms that make the bacteria resistant to antibiotics and able to form biofilm on solid surfaces.

During research in Vietnam, Nhu began to develop her interest in using Next Generation Sequencing to study antimicrobial resistance and pathogenesis in bacteria. Following her interest, Nhu moved to Brisbane to start her PhD under supervision of Prof. Mark Schembri and A. Prof. Scott Beatson. Her projects are about uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC), with a focus on what make E. coli become UPEC and how UPEC becomes resistant to antibiotics. Outside of her current projects, Nhu is also interested in bacterial outbreak investigation using whole genome sequencing data.

Nhu has knowledge and is familiar with a wide range of bioinformatic tools to analyse genome sequencing data and wet lab techniques, which give her a great opportunity to do cross-discipline reseach.

Outside of working, she enjoys going out with her family, playing with her little girl, travelling and baking.
